of what you see in the polls. this momentum that's very much on the side of mitt romney. and paul ryan. so it is very much up to vice president biden to take a shot here and try to stop some of that momentum because if you see a win by paul ryan, it's covered as a one-two punch. the momentum will continue. we know talking to some of the vice president's aides that he's going to come out swinging. this's the expectation, to be on offense. we've been told he's eager, feeling good and trying to draw a contrast. when you look at the tiny table in the picture, brooke, it is a pretty intimate setting. if he's going to get in to it and draw a contrast, that's sort of code for confrontation. we'll see if he makes good on the promise of the team. >> bring yaannbrianna, do they say something memorable, as in not in a good way memorable? >> reporter: you'll remember he's sort of known as a bit of a gaffe machine. puts in his foot in his mouth from time to time. he said that the middle class buried for four years and that was something that the romney campaign just jumped on. the thing is, while he's

, certainly we're looking to see if joe biden can stem the tide here. certainly it's in favor of the romney-ryan ticket. why is there all of this boxing terminology going on? well, take a look at this. this is one of the posters here for sale at center college. this is being set up with a lot of boxing terminology. perhaps that's part of it. also, suzanne, i wanted to tell you a little bit about that photo that we put up there earlier. if we can show that again because that's something that only cnn has. you can only see it right here. it's an exclusive look. >> if you don't recognize the guy on the right, that is chris van holland. he is the ranking democrat. the top democrat on the house budget committee. he knows paul ryan because he is the budget chairman of that committee. you're seeing the back of the head of shayla murray. that is the communications director for the vice president. >> she's been playing martha are aedditz. the biden team went to great lengths to replicate the conditions that the vice president will face here in danville, kentucky. that table, which is a semicircle with a

you've seen, and the polls show it, the romney/ryan ticket has momentum. the polls have tightened in recent days following mitt romney's performance, where he obviously won that debate. there's a lot more attention here. if joe biden is able to perform very well -- and he's a pretty good debater. if he's able to perform pretty well perhaps he can stem some of that momentum, at least dampen a little criticism heading into the debate next week in new york, buy the president a little time. if paul ryan clearly dominates in this debate it will be seen very much as a one-two punch and that will just mean more momentum. >> they've been, as we call it in college, cramming. how have both of them been preparing? >> reporter: yeah. it is like cramming. i think it's sort of like going back, studying for -- one aide told me it's like studying for the s.a.t.s in the middle of a campaign. they go over a lot of briefing materials. they're brushing up on domestic and foreign policy, getting to certainly know each other's positions on everything. there's a lot of sort of time spent aalone where th

. they first blamed the youtube video. now they're frying to blame the romney-ryan ticket for make thing an issue. with respect to iraq, we had the same position before the withdrawal, which was we agreed with the obama administration. the vice president was put in charge of the negotiations by president obama and they failed to get the agreement. we don't have a status of forces agreement because they failed to get one. that's what we were talking about. when it comes to the veterans, we owe them a great debt of gratitude, including your some, bo. >> thank you. >> but we also want to make sure we don't lose the things we fought so hard to get. and we agreed with the 2014 transition in afghanistan. but what we also want to do is make sure we're not projecting weakness abroad. this benghazi issue would be a tragedy in and of itself. but unfortunately, it's indicative of a broader problem, and that is what we're watching is the unraveling of the obama foreign policy, which is making things more chaotic and us let safe. >> i want to talk to you right in the middle of the crisis, governor ro

concerned about, and don't forget, paul ryan was the first test of mitt romney. mitt romney chose him to be his running mate. and so it was very important to mitt romney himself that paul ryan be a credible contender sitting next to joe biden, who is a very experienced politician, and also has been vice president. >> gloria, you've been doing this a while. was that the most incredible vice presidential debate you've seen? >> it was. i must say the anticipation was more for sarah palin for me because we were sort of interested to see, again, joe biden, how he would deal with sarah palin, and whether she could actually stand toe to toe with him. the bar was very low for sarah palin and she surpassed what people expected. this was so interesting, of course, because joe biden essentially had to save the democratic party or so it seemed. and the president had to watch him very closely and probably pretty beholden today, but you have the town hall coming up that candy is going to moderate. >> let me tell everyone about it. gloria borger, thank you. coming out of here this vp debate and head

. what did mitt romney do? he brought in paul ryan who has even less, if you could imagine that, foreign policy experience except maybe perhaps voting against tougher sanctions on iran while he was in congress. as far as that argument's concerned, i think it's rather debunked. i want to read to you very quickly a quote from mitt romney from that video with the 47%. this is his -- this is his foreign policy in a nutshell. so what do you do -- this is about peace in the middle east. you say you move things along the best way you can. you hope for some degree of stability. but you recognize this is an unsolved problem and we kick the ball down the field and hope ultimately somehow something will happen and resolve it. that's what mitt romney said on foreign policy behind closed doors. whatever he says today in a couple of hours, you got to juxtapose that to that quote in the video when he thought no one else was listening. >> john, one of mitt romney's problems is the only specifics he's given as to how his foreign policy differs from president obama is that he's going to talk tougher and s

on congressman ryan's positions on the issues, and governor romney has embraced at least everything i can see. i don't want to say anything in the debate that's not completely accurate. >> reporter: so what are the candidates' biggest strengths? analysts say for ryan it's his ability to speak in detail about policy issues. for biden, his ease in talking about how national policies affect ordinary people. here is congressman ryan's take on biden. >> he's fast on the cuff, he's a witty guy, he knows who he is and he's been doing this for 40 years. you're not going to rattle joe biden. joe is very good on the attack. joe is very good at trying to confuse the issues. >> reporter: when it comes to advice for the candidates? >> try to be comfortable in your skin, be rested, look into the camera, smile from time to time. >> reporter: and a little humor always helps. >> i can see my wife and i think she's thinking, gee, i wish you would go out into the private sector. i'm goi >> i'm going to try to help you do that, joe. >> athena jones. >> vice president biden and congressman paul ryan get their turn t

romney performed well. people are going to say paul ryan should perform well. looking ahead, what does the president need to do or say to come out strong in the next debate without appearing aloof? >> well, first of all, how about just don't be aloof? you're supposed to be this huge inspiring leader. maybe try to bring a little zest in your voice. you're trying to save the world. have a red bull before you get out there. obama has the caffeine advantage over mitt romney who won't touch the stuff for religious reasons. exploit that advantage. also, perhaps barack obama can not take little naps every time that romney speaks. you can see it right there. he's like -- every time he would say one thing, he'd be like, well, romney wants to -- wants $5 trillion in tax cuts mostly for the wealthy, and romney is like, no, i don't, and obama is like okay, i guess you don't. maybe stick a little bit with your argument, and then my last big tip for him, the part of the debate you're allowed to prepare in advance, the closing statement, actually have one ready because it was a very uninspiring closi

, not vice presidents, but romney has momentum, bit of a breeze at his back. can paul ryan continue building that momentum or could joe biden be more passionate than the president in the first presidential debate and stop it? >> let's talk about the numbers, john. mitt romney still getting post debate bounce. you can't say any more that debates don't matter. the new cnn poll, poll of polls, mitt romney has a slight lead with likely voters, 48% to 47%. his performance certainly showed that you can't say it doesn't matter anymore. there is no bigger swing state than ohio, where you are. >> reporter: the history tells you no republican has ever been elected president without winning the state of ohio. can you do the math and have romney win without this state? yes. is it likely? no. before the debate some polls had him down as many as nine points in ohio. new cnn poll row leased last night has him down four, 51-47. another group, american research group show ed romney up a point in ohio. no question. just like in the national polls, a bit of a boost. romney is up in the suburbs, up among indepe

paul ryan stands on the issues, where romney stands on the issue, but this camp was all about kind of gearing towards a mock debate. he did one each night the last four nights bringing him a a total of at least half a dozen he's done. 90-minute mock debates very much like we'll see tonight, ashleigh. >> called a gaffe machine, among other things. what has he been doing, or at least what has the campaign been doing or allowing us to know about, anyway, to try to minimize the gaffes that could lead to what john king referred to, internet moments that live forever? >> reporter: that's right. when you think of joe biden, he's almost synonymous with gaffes. things we see when he's on the campaign trail. certainly his words sort of trip him up and become these moments. the thing is, and i've asked his folks about this. they sort of say they're not really worried about it. i think certainly when you're dealing with joe biden there's always kind of that in the back of your head, but actually, if you look at his debate performances and he's had many on the national stage, these gaffes don't
